Over the past four years, Linda and I have taken many drives along Florida Highway 50. A short distance east of Brooksville, nestled among whispering pines and sunlit stretches of land, we discovered a special place—the Richloam General Store. It’s more than a shop. It’s a doorway to the past.
You’ll find it just south of Florida Highway 50, at the corner of Richloam Clay Sink Road and Goat Road. The modest building stands in Sumter County, surrounded by forests and wildlife areas. From the outside, its weathered boards and creaking floors hint at its long history. Inside, it holds stories of family, laughter, and a tight-knit Florida community.
Stepping through its door feels like entering another era. There’s a quiet energy in the air—familiar smells of snacks, tools, and something older: history. But to truly understand the Richloam General Store, you have to know where it came from—and the people who kept it alive.
A Foundation Built on Community
Sidney Brinson built the Richloam General Store on June 28, 1922. The area around it had rich soil and growing farmland. As it developed, people needed a central spot to shop, gather, and do business. This store became that place.
In the beginning, the store likely sold basics: flour, sugar, coffee, and farming supplies like seeds and tools. It met the needs of early settlers, turpentine workers, and farmers. In a rural world, far from cities, this store became a lifeline.
