“Nice pig, Doc.”
Recognize that line? If you don’t, don’t worry—this is a bit of a trick question. The line comes from the movie Doc Hollywood and is repeated by several quirky residents of the fictional town of Grady. It’s a running gag in the film and part of what gives the movie its endearing, small-town charm. But who is “Doc”? That would be Dr. Ben Stone. And the movie? You guessed it—Doc Hollywood.
Why is that important? I’m glad you asked. I’ll get to that in a moment for Doc Hollywood was very important to Micanopy, Florida.
In 1991, the romantic comedy Doc Hollywood hit the big screen, starring Michael J. Fox as Dr. Benjamin “Ben” Stone, a young, hotshot plastic surgeon with big dreams of making it big in Beverly Hills. But fate—and a bit of bad luck—has other plans. After crashing his vintage Porsche in a small Southern town, Dr. Stone finds himself stuck in Grady, a place that’s more interested in charm and community than cosmetic surgery.
The Fictional Town of Grady
Grady is portrayed as the epitome of a tight-knit Southern town, supposedly located in South Carolina. It’s the kind of place where life moves slower, the annual “Squash Festival” is a big deal, and everyone knows everyone. At first, the townsfolk are suspicious of the flashy, big-city doctor, but as the story unfolds, they welcome him as one of their own. Grady is basically a modern-day Mayberry—full of heart, tradition, and more than a few eccentric characters.
So, what does this have to do with this article?
Well, while the movie takes place in South Carolina, the real filming location for Grady was none other than the historic town of Micanopy, Florida—a place that perfectly captures the essence of Southern charm.

Micanopy, Florida: The Real-Life Grady
My wife Linda and I have been lucky enough to visit Micanopy several times, and we’re always struck by how peaceful and secluded it feels—even though it’s less than a mile off Interstate 75. Tucked into Alachua County, just south of Gainesville in North Central Florida, Micanopy is Florida’s oldest continuously inhabited inland town, established way back in 1821. Practically the entire downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it’s easy to see why—brick sidewalks, shaded streets, and historic buildings make it feel like a step back in time.

Long before American settlers arrived, the area was home to indigenous communities. In 1539, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto passed through and encountered the Timucua village of Cuscowilla. The town’s name, “Micanopy,” honors Seminole Chief Micanopy, a prominent leader during the Second Seminole War.
Chief Micanopy and the Town’s Deeper Roots
While Chief Micanopy didn’t design the town or establish its institutions, his legacy is deeply tied to the land and its early history. Before American settlement, the area around Micanopy was home to the village of Cuscowilla, which served as a capital of sorts under his leadership. He was a central figure in the Seminole resistance to the U.S. government’s forced relocation policies.
This resistance contributed to the outbreak of the Second Seminole War (1835–1842), and several battles—including the Battle of Micanopy and Battle of Welika Pond (1836)—were fought nearby. Though Chief Micanopy was eventually captured and relocated to the Oklahoma Territory, his name lives on as a powerful symbol of the region’s indigenous heritage and resistance.
The Micanopy Historical Society Museum, housed in a historic warehouse downtown, offers exhibits that include Native American artifacts and stories from the Seminole Wars, helping visitors connect the past to the present.
Charming Shops and Antiques Galore
Downtown Micanopy is a treasure trove for antique lovers, history buffs, and anyone who enjoys a leisurely stroll through artsy boutiques. Linda and I spent part of an afternoon wandering through the Micanopy Antique Mall, where we were amazed at its contents. If you’re looking for something unique, you’ll likely find it here.
- The Shop: A local favorite filled with vintage décor, handmade crafts, and rare finds.
- Micanopy Antique Mall: Fans of old-world charm will love room after room of collectibles and curios.
- Delectable Collectibles: This shop is a whimsical maze of trinkets, old books, and hidden gems.
Century-old buildings with creaky floors and old wooden counters house many of the shops, making the shopping experience feel more like a treasure hunt.
Good Eats in a Small Package
Micanopy isn’t overflowing with restaurants. However, what restaurants they do have are full of character and good flavor.
- Pearl Country Store & Barbecue: Part gas station, part smokehouse, and all delicious. Locals rave about the pulled pork and banana pudding.
- Coffee n’ Cream: A cozy spot for coffee, ice cream, and casual sandwiches. It’s the perfect rest stop after a day of shopping or exploring.
- Blue Highway Pizzeria (just outside town): Known for their thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas with locally sourced ingredients.
Don’t come expecting fine dining—come for comfort food and warm welcomes.
Final Thoughts: Why Micanopy is Worth Your Time
Linda and I are always eager for a return trip to Micanopy—not just for the food or the history, but for the way it feels. It’s the kind of town that seems to exhale peace. People wave. They talk. They remember your name. They tell stories about the past like they happened yesterday.
It’s not just the place where Doc Hollywood was filmed—it’s a living, breathing small town that welcomes you to slow down and enjoy a simpler pace of life.
And who knows? If you ever visit Micanopy, we just might bump into each other. If you hear someone say, “Nice pig, Doc,” don’t be surprised—it might just be one of the locals, or maybe me, keeping the charm of Grady alive.
