When I first heard the phrase, "Go to the middle of the bridge and turn left," I assumed it was a joke. It sounded like something out of a riddle book, or perhaps a cryptic note left in a treasure hunt (that sounds like a fun thing to write about someday). But in Zanesville, Ohio, that sentence is just good, honest directions.

Linda and I discovered the Jane Ross Reeves Octagon House through a friend of ours who was living in Shirley, Indiana a few years ago. He called me one day and told me that he had something to show to us that he thought we would appreciate seeing, but he wouldn't say what it was.
